Whats sadder: CO or DCUO ?

I occasionally drop into both and kind-of-like both. But sooner than later I usually get bored/infuriated by them for one reason or another. Be it the constant next to nothing in CO or desperate methods like the not-so-recent time capsules (lock boxes) which contains progression in DCUO.

Their owners gave up on them, the funds both get are enough for two and a half dev to keep them afloat. And thats our Superhero MMO market since CoX's demise; full of wasted potential; games that coded themselves into a corner that does not allow them to expand with major new elements; stagnating along knowing they are the only games allowing players to create a unique superhero in an open world scenario.

... well... considering my love for the DC franchise; its current strength in a movie universe, renewed "rebirth" comic series and interacting TV show universe I'd say DCUO is the sadder one for me. And considering that its not a self owned license like CO is with Cryptic I'd dare say its the more endangered one too.

*sigh*

I look forward to VO & CoT. I'm curious to see what they bring to the table. But I'll have my hype clubbed and locked in the basement since I know how very exacting my taste has grown over the years.

I had great times with CO as a day 1 player. I absolutely never ever thought, that a superhero mmo could be a fantastic roleplaying game. So my expectations on VO are high regarding the RP elements.

I hope VO will live forever. I hope this will be the place where all the lost heroes meet and play together....

DCUO and CO mostly have opposite problems. CO is amazing for Roleplaying and creative characters, but lacks content and what content it has suffers from very poor design, making it rather un fun after awhile. Enemy "difficulty" there consists of knock and stun spam, more heavy on the knock, (which are both major loss of control effects) forcing the player to spam the Z key till they can play again.

In comparison, DCUO has amazing fun combat, good content, but lacks terribly in the roleplay department, and has a primitive character creator compared to CO.

The game is full of l33tspeak names like BatmannX33X and PowerdUdE45xyz, and original characters are actually a rarity.

DCUO has gameplay, CO has Roleplay, neither has both. I hope Valiance can offer better.
There is tremendous life and personality in a name. It should be at least as agonized over as any character trait.”

I had fun with CO but eventually grew bored with it when it first came out. I'd say it's the sadder of the two, primarily because it could have had so much more development. Instead it became a cess-pool of scrubs and "Stop having fun!" guys who had zero tolerance for how others played the game. Many players acted like sado-masochists wanting CO to get some gruelingly difficult content when the game had non, so the devs ended up adding "Punishing" rather than "challenging" content to the game. Long iteration times, trial/error, poorly thought out puzzles, team play which forces the holy trinity and no other alternative, killed the game. Not to mention balance passes designed to cater to the scrubs and shfg's.

And course, a lack of things like buffs/debuffs/cc, and attacks which all do nothing but damage with effects which are mostly just there for "moar damage" with debuff effects that don't even stack proper.

DCUO? Well I can say it has had a leg up on gameplay being distinct, which I did like. I didn't like that it went towards generic raid content and more generic raid content right away after hitting level 30 and a repetitive solo path for gearing up the skinner box :/. DCUO didnt get boring combat wise, but I feel it appealed to much to those who only cared about gear, which I feel is a prominent problem in mmorpg's; to many players who only just want better and better(ad infinitum) gear and power levels.

I liked CoH not just cause I could make a legitimately powerful character, not just because of it's ever increasingly rich details n lore, but also that it had high replayability. I mean energy blast knockbacks, dark blast to-hit debuffs(in every attack no less), radiation blast defense debuffs or even simple fire blast or say sonic blasts -resistances, and the capability of stacking them with other effects or players of the same set, it created room to always try a new character once in a while for a fresher experience. CoH never got old for me cause of that replayability while CO and DCUO both just get old for me.

CO is still the best Superhero-MMO out there. But it`s dying due to a lack of new content. Also the players get milked like cows and they get nothing back... wait they get something back... lockboxes...
