Ability creep?

Something that to some extend bothers me about all the Superhero MMOs out there (all 2 of them :P) is how overloaded characters became. When I think about Superheros in pretty much any medium & franchise the amount of abilities they have is quite small. Its a fighting style which might or might not be super-powered (i.e. Krypton Fistpunch vs. Batman Martial Arts) maybe a travelpower (Flight is a travelpower; Batmobile is awesome but not a power ;) ) and while we are at it we already have one of the most loaded Supers with Kryptonians on Earth. But they are an exception. Others are far "simpler". Flash is Superfast. Thats it; hes cool. I love him. But its just that everything he does is because hes superfast (talking primary about combat abilities). Black Canary: Martial Arts and the canary cry. Captain America: greatly enhanced strength, endurance, reflexes and a Shield for Combat/Defence. Everone with justt a fistful of "active abilities".

Sometimes I look at some of my chars and really think "damn, could that one not be just an awesome martial artist with maybe one additional special?" which even if its possible to somehow setup ends up in a completely inferior char.

I really hope for the option to pick a lot of passive abilities.

Just my thoughts; enough rambling for now :)

I think the best way to make your "vision" come true is to pick a melee defensive set (either Titan or Brawler AT) since I suspect those sets will be primarily made up out of toggles and/or passives. Though the little I have heard about being able to choose the visuals of a power there will most likely be options to make them look relatively close your vision as well.

The thing is that it's really hard to "distill down" offensive sets (a.k.a anything affecting enemies) into just one two or tree active (if you are making a set of, say, nine) powers due to how broadly they can be applied. Think of the in-game powers more of as different ways to use a "base" power or skill.

In the end it comes down to the mental "preset" you have I guess. When I just had been hyped by Hulk when creating something I do want smash and 9 actives are... hard to fill (lets try: fist punch, leg kick, throw nearest thing, use nearest thing as club, stomp, hit with both fists.... punch & kick with other fist / leg... oh, and a demoralizing debuff like shout or something).. doable but a stretch.. A Zatanna on the other hand begs for an overload of abilities and strong learning curve; 9 actives sounds far to small for a spellcaster.

I know, its probably impossible to bring under one roof with how MMOs work. Its just something I feel was not really thought much about in at least previous Super MMOs. Its all more like how a MMO char would be instead of looking at different Superheros.

Or they did and then just yelled "fck it!" after days of bending brains around that issue :P
